Short Bio
Plamen Makariev, PhD, is Associate Professor at the Faculty of
Philosophy, Sofia University. He is Head of the Philosophy Department
since 1999. P. Makariev gives courses in Political Philosophy,
Philosophy of Education and Intercultural Communication both at
graduate and post-graduate level. He also gives a course in Philosophy
of Religion at the Higher Islamic Institute in Sofia.P.
Makariev has specialized at Vienna University in 1996 (he participated
in a one semester seminar of Karl Popper) and at the Catholic
University of America, Washington DC in 2000. He has taken part,
presenting papers, in numerous international academic events, such as
e.g. the Salzburg Seminar (1994), the conference Human Rights and the
Dialogue of Civilizations, Teheran (2001), the XXI World Philosophy
Congress Istanbul (2003), the Beirut Conference on the Public Spheres
(2004), the conference Cultural Education. Cultural Sustainability at
the Hebrew University, Jerusalem (2004), the Congress on Intercultural
Communication of the SIETAR-Europa (2005), etc.
The main areas of
research interest for Assoc. Prof. Makariev are the issues of
multiculturalism, intercultural communication, intercultural education,
deliberative democracy, inter-religious relations. He has published one
monograph, about forty articles and has edited six collections of
papers. Works of him have been published in 7 countries, in Bulgarian,
English and German. Assoc. Prof. Makariev is member of the editorial
boards of the international journal Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority
Education, published by the Lawrence Erlbaum Associates and of the
journal Strategies for Policy in Science and Education, published by
the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria. He is also member of
the Consultative Board on Minority Education at the same Ministry.
Since 2003 P. Makariev is Board member of the Center for Intercultural Studies and Partnership in Sofia.
